lost lake hike
the scene: alaska wilderness on labor day weekend (aka the last weekend of summer)
we prepared for our trip friday night, keeping the knowledge of the weather forecast in mind: 90% chance of rain. i, of course, assumed that the forecast would be wrong, because there is a 90% chance that it will change. sadly, i was wrong. the hubster, friends jamie & cole, 4 furry kiddos, and i drove two hours south (in 2 cars) to the start of the lost lake trail. i rode with jamie and we took turns talking to our guys on the walkie talkies. actually, it was more like they were backseat driving...even though they were in the car ahead of us :) silly boys.
we unloaded the gear and the guys set up the cars at two parking lots. the cool thing about this particular hike is that you can hike in from one spot and the trail goes all the way through, which means no doubling back & no repetitive scenery. just as we all slung our packs on and headed towards the trail....the rain started.
rain, drizzle, rain, pour, rain, drizzle...somehow the rain always came down in the direction of our faces.
okay okay, it wasn't as bad as it sounded - it was wet, but not super cold. and the dogs had a BLAST! we got such a kick out of them running up and down the trail. mia would always run & check on the last person in line. vito wore in his new pack and it did well - he even went swimming with it on!
i unfortunately did not get a ton of pictures because it was raining...but here's a few from the morning we were hiking out, when it stopped raining!!
see how the leaves are ALREADY changing?!

overall the hike was a lot of fun. it was refreshing to get out of town for a couple of days, even if it was raining.
p.s. if you even plan to do an overnight hike with a 40 pound pack, i would highly recommend training for it first. because i could barely walk the following couple of days.

memorial day weekend
we had a busy memorial day weekend! we visited with friends, hung out with our puppies, (bfff) cooked some yummy food, addressing some envelopes (wedding invite post coming soon), and went on a hike.
actually, it was more like bfff woke me up early on sunday and said we are going on a hike. so we got our stuff all packed up, got the doggies packed up, and my dad came over to hike with us. we went to a place called bird ridge...and it was basically straight up the mountain the entire time! the weather was gorgeous and here's some pics of our adventure:

lost lake adventure
sorry for the short hiatus - here's what's been happening:
i should be receiving the last sheet of book cloth for the custom project today, so i'll be able to finish that in the next couple of days. will post pictures once it's completely done!
and here's the big story! bfff, puppy, and i went on a hiking/camping adventure over the weekend. we hiked to a place called lost lake. it's about 8 miles in from the primrose parking lot where we started. this was my first overnight trip - anyone who knows me could tell you that my nickname certainly isn't "nature girl". (we won't go into what my nickname is either.) i've never been huge on camping or hiking (adventures on guam is the exception). however, bfff loves it.
we stopped off the beaten path and followed another trail to this incredible view of a waterfall:
we hiked through the trees for quite a while:
as we cleared the tree tops, this was the view we saw:
vito ran back and forth on the trail - he must have ran 3 or 4 times the distance bfff & i traveled. i'm sure he's saying "what is taking you people so long??":
after getting above the tree line, we took a break and ate some lunch:
then back on the trail! vito leading the way:
then getting sidetracked...
our first view of lost lake:
we hiked around a bit to find the perfect spot for our camp. we discovered a great area right next to the aqua water:
tent is set up and we finally get to relax and enjoy alaska's scenery:
puppy FINALLY ran out of energy and fell asleep during dinner:
when the wind died down, we moved into the tent to escape the bug attacks. vito immediately made himself comfortable...on my bed:
cozy in our tent:
in the morning, the lake was so still, we could see the reflection of the mountains. vito went on morning patrol:
one more gorgeous picture of lost lake as we left:
vito is once again waiting for us...
and we are back!

memorial day hike
my bff and i went on our first hike of the year! we also took our puppy for his first big outing too - it was a relatively easy hike and a good way to introduce him to the wilderness. we went to "the dome"...actually close to it. i could have sworn the last hour on the way up was a 90 degree incline. i realized that i'm not as in shape as i thought! there is a landing that we stopped and had lunch at. ribs and apples and bananas YUM! the weather was extremely cooperative and i tried to get a slight tan. here are some pictures of our outing:

i hope everyone had a great long weekend. it went by entirely too fast. i worked on a little shelf cabinet that i've been revamping and it should be finished up in the next couple of days. i will post pictures of it when it is done!
